Artist Statement
Working outside in all weathers and seasons, my paintings begin with a focus on observational drawing as a way of immersing myself with the subject. They progress toward dynamic compositions in oil, gouache, and recently acrylic. I seek to synthesize reality by employing the use of bold colour and strong mark making.
This interpretation often leads to transformative and surprising outcomes, as I grapple with combining my own feeling for the landscape with the environmental pressures of working en plein air. There is often an ambiguity present in the work, which at times tips into a surrealistic timbre. Landscape and objects can become imbued with an anthropomorphic undertone.
In terms of subject matter, my eye is frequently drawn to the overlooked or unloved aspects of the natural and urban environment, searching for a lyrical expression that characterizes the uniqueness of a place and the spatial relationship that humans inhabit within their environment.
